1,339 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Alberta. About 12,400 (12,416) tests were conducted for a test positivity rate of approximately 10.8 percent.
There are 487 individuals hospitalized in Alberta due to COVID-19. The number of patients in intensive care units is 114.
5 new deaths have occurred. The number of lives lost due to the virus in Alberta is 2,388.
The number of active cases of COVID-19 has increased to 12,868 – up by 578 from August 31st.
1,255 new variant cases have been identified.
There are 3,974 active cases of COVID-19 in the Edmonton Zone, 3,593 in the Calgary Zone, and 1,579 in the Central Zone.
Crossfield is reporting 15 active cases of the virus. The Three Hills/Highway 21 area is at 32, Sundre is up to 43, Sylvan Lake is at 55, the Didsbury/Carstairs/South Mountain View County area is up to 69, Innisfail is at 71, Olds is up to 85, and Rocky Mountain House is at 100.
Red Deer County is at 132 active cases of COVID-19, while Mountain View County is up to 112.
More than 240,000 (240,328) Albertans have recovered from the virus.
As of September 1st, over 5.5 million (5,574,762) doses of vaccine have been administered in Alberta. In Innisfail, 62.8 percent of people of all ages have been immunized with at least one dose, while 56.9 percent are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, Premier Jason Kenney is defending his government’s handling of the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kenney, who hasn’t spoken publicly since August 9th, held a Facebook Live appearance last night. He says Albertans need to learn to live with the virus and there is no COVID-zero policy. Kenney says the emphasis should be on vaccinations rather than restrictions.
The Opposition N-D-P, meantime, says it is time Premier Kenney or Health Minister Tyler Shandro tell Albertans about how they plan to address a rising fourth wave of the pandemic.
The province reported over 1,300 new COVID-19 cases on August 31st, the highest one-day total since mid-May, when the peak of the last wave began to recede. Alberta has been averaging more than one-thousand new cases a day for the last week. The number of intensive care unit cases has doubled in the last 10 days.
