The Alberta Medical Association says hospitals can no longer provide normal standards of intensive care because of a shortage of specialist staff.
The association says demand for critical care is so great due to COVID-19 that the number of patients assigned to each nurse has been increased.
The group says the situation could lead to doctors having to make decisions about who gets life-saving treatment.
The concern is raised in a public letter from the association’s intensive care doctors about the COVID-19 health crisis that has left Alberta’s hospitals overwhelmed with patients.
