The newest team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League continues to present problems for the Olds Grizzlys.
The Black & Gold fell behind theBulldogs 5-1 by the 5:13 mark of period 2 on Friday (February 4th) in Blackfalds. The OGs battled back to get as close as 6-5 after 40 minutes, before eventually losing 8-6. Olds is 0-4-1 versus the Bulldogs. The season series concludes when Blackfalds (21-27-1) visits the SportsComplex on February 11th. The 2021-2022 season marks the first in the AJHL for the Bulldogs.
20 year old right winger Sheldon Kwiatkowski from Sexsmith had a goal and an assist for the Grizzlys on Friday, so did his linemate 16 year old left winger Niklas Gudmundson from Carnation, Washington. 19 year old centre Tanner Klimpke from Calgary rounds out that line. He had one assist. All three of them now have points in 4 straight games. Kwiatkowski explains why they fit well together.
Kwiatkowski says the Grizzlys weren’t able to follow up Tuesday’s 3-1 win in Okotoks with the same kind of defensive performance.
20 year old forward Aidan Coupe from Gilbert, Arizona had a pair of goals for Olds in the loss. He has 7 in 39 games this season now. 19 year old Captain Liam Hughes was back in the lineup for Olds after serving a 3 game suspension. The Edmonton product had a goal and an assist. 19 year old forward Kasey Hiemstra from Big Valley scored his first goal as a member of the Black & Gold. It was his first in 17 games. The last time Hiemstra tallied was part of a two goal, one assist performance back on October 22nd when he was still a member the Dragons. That helped them beat Fort McMurray 4-1 in Drumheller.
The Grizzlys finish up their seven game road swing with 2 wins, 4 losses and an overtime defeat.
Coming up on Saturday (February 5th) at 7pm, you can hear live coverage on 96.5 CKFM as the Grizzlys (7-37-5) host the Lloydminster Bobcats (27-21-2). The Bobcats are 2 and 0 in February after beating the Eagles 4-2 last night in Canmore.
With 11 games remaining in the regular season, Olds remains 9 points back of the Calgary Canucks (11-34-6). The Canucks occupy the 7th and final playoff spot in the South Division. Calgary was blown out 9 to nothing last night by the Bandits in Brooks.
