As heard on 96.5 CKFM last night, Sheldon Kwiatkowski scored in the shootout but it wasn’t enough as the Olds Grizzlys dropped their opening Alberta Junior Hockey League game of 2022.
5-4 was the final as the Drumheller Dragons bounced back from a 2 to nothing first period deficit to win at the SportsComplex.
Kwiatkowski is a 19 year old forward from Sexsmith, Alberta who opened the scoring for Olds with a first period power play tally. 19 year old defenceman Tristan Baumung from Sundre also scored as did 16 year old forward Niklas Gudmundson from Carnation, Washington and 18 year old forward Colby Browne from Evergreen, Colorado.
19 year old forward Liam Hughes from Edmonton had a tremendous chance early in overtime to be the hero for the Grizzlys, however Dragons 20 year old goaltender Eric Ward from Edmonton made a spectacular save with his blocker.
Hughes finished the game with one assist.
19 year old goalie Jared Whale from Calgary made 40 saves during 65 minutes of action and stopped 1 of the 3 Dragons in the shootout.
The Grizzlys record slips to 5-29-and-4. They are 0-13-and-2 in their last 15 games and sit last in the league. Their homestand continues on Saturday when Grande Prairie comes to town.
Meanwhile, Drumheller improves to 23-11-and-3. The third place Dragons are 1 point back of second place Camrose in the South Division standings. Drumheller has won all five meetings of the season series with the Grizzlys. Olds is 0-3-and-2 versus the Dragons. On home ice this season against Drumheller, the Grizzlys scored first in all three games but wound up going 0-1-and 2.
