As heard on 96.5 CKFM, Tanner Klimpke’s second goal of the game got the Olds Grizzlys within one in their opening game of 2023.
Unfortunately for the Black & Gold, Drumheller (20-14-2-2) would hold on to win 4-3. The Dragons led 4-1 after scoring a pair of goals in a 38 seconds span in the third period.
Klimpke – who is a 2002 born forward from Calgary – leads the Grizzlys with 23 goals this season. 4 of those have come on the power play. He is tied for the 4th most goals in the AJHL along with fellow 2002 born Calgary product Tyler Wallace of the Blackfalds Bulldogs.
Defenceman Blake Matheson (2005) from Everett, Washington notched his second goal of the season for Olds, while Markus Cumberworth (2002) from Surrey, B.C. kicked out 30 of the 34 shots the Dragons sent his way. Drumheller outshot Olds 34-30. The Grizzlys were 1/5 on the power play. The Dragons went 0/3.
Drumheller has won all four meetings with Olds this season. The Grizzlys have lost 18 consecutive regular season games to the Dragons (0-15-3). Drumheller will be back at the SportsComplex again on Saturday, January 14th. The six game season series will conclude at the Drumheller Memorial Arena on February 18th. The last regular season win for Olds was 3-1 in Drumheller on November 1st, 2019. The last home win for the Grizzlys over the Dragons was the home opener that season 5-4 in overtime on September 21st, 2019.
The Grizzlys (12-24-3-0) are right back at it on home ice again on Saturday, January 7th against the Calgary Canucks (12-17-6-2). 96.5 CKFM will have live coverage at 7 o’clock.
