Cochrane, Alta. – On Sept. 3, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Cochrane RCMP observed a red Mazda SUV driving northbound on Highway 22 with no lights on.
Members quickly discovered that the vehicle was stolen out of Calgary. The driver of the stolen vehicle was observed to be driving dangerously almost causing a head on collision with police, while tossing items out of the vehicle windows. Members deployed a successful tire deflation device that allowed members to contain the stolen vehicle. A male passenger fled from the vehicle and resisted arrest. Members quickly gained control of the male and place him in the back of the police vehicle. The male driver attempted to continue driving but crashed into a pedestrian walkway fence. The male driver exited the vehicle and fled but was quickly apprehended by police. Recovery of items thrown from the vehicle revealed stolen tools, clothing and illicit drugs, including Crystal Methamphetamine and Fentanyl. No civilians were injured.
Dereck McInnis (41), a resident of Calgary, has been charged with the following offences:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking
- Resisting a Peace Officer
- Flight from Peace Officer
Jason Wilkening (43), a resident of Calgary, had an outstanding Canada Wide Warrant and has been charged with the following additional offences:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking
- Flight from Peace Officer
McInnis and Wilkening were held for a judicial interim release hearing and remanded into custody. McInnis has a court date set for September 12, 2023, and Wilkening for September 19, 2023, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Cochrane.
