The Innisfail Eagles will try to win their second straight senior men’s AAA hockey provincial title this week.
Innisfail isĀ up 2 games to none on the Stony Plain Eagles in the best of five provincial championship series after winning Game 1 at home by the score of 7-3 on March 2nd, and Game 2 by the score of 10-4 on the road on March 16th.
Innisfail Eagles General Manager Ryan Dodd says sticking to their game plan paid off with a 5 goal outburst in the third period in Game 1 and a 6 goal third period in Game 2.
Its been a battle to rebuild senior AAA hockey over the last couple of years, so Dodd says it would be huge for the Innisfail Eagles to win a second straight provincial championship.
Being able to capture their first AAA provincial title last season was sweet, and he says being able to do it again would mean everything to them.
The Innisfail Eagles host the Stony Plain Eagles for Game 3 of the best of five provincial final on Friday, March 22nd at 8pm at the Twin Arena. Dodd says shoot to win is back and there will be a chance to win $1,000 dollars.
He says they receive great support from their fans and sponsors.
If necessary Game 4 would be in Stony Plain on Saturday, and if a fifth and deciding game is required it would take place in Innisfail on March 30th.
The Innisfail Eagles won a senior men’s AAA championship for the first time in the 75 year history of their franchise by finishing off a three game sweep of Stony Plain last March.
Meantime, the Ontario Hockey Association announced last week that the 2024 Allan Cup Challenge tournament will once again feature the host team from Dundas, Ontario – the Dundas Real McCoys along with representatives from Newfoundland and Alberta, as well as a representative from the OHA’s Allan Cup Hockey League. It will take place from April 20th through the 27th.
The Allan Cup has been competed for since 1908 and it is Canada’s oldest hockey championship. Dundas won it on home ice when the Real McCoys hosted the tourney last spring.
