April 17, 2024 | Red Deer, AB – The 23rd Annual North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships Tarp Auction, held at the Harvest Centre at Westerner Park on April 12, surpassed all expectations, marking a resounding success.
A total of 36 chuckwagon tarps and 32 chariot tarps were auctioned off, with the bidding reaching remarkable heights. The highest bid for a chuckwagon tarp reached an impressive $6500, claimed by driver Clayton Wildcat, purchased by Willows Plumbing & Heating Inc. from Wetaskiwin, AB. Clayton Wildcat, a seasoned veteran in the sport, promises an exhilarating 2024 season.
Similarly, Driver Carter Wildcat secured the highest bid for a chariot tarp, reaching $3100, also purchased by Willows Plumbing & Heating Inc.
Over 220 attendees, including 60 registered bidders, witnessed the spirited auction firsthand. Hosted by Danny Hooper and Darrell Johnston, the audience enjoyed a lively experience throughout the event, complemented by the musical talents of Country 23, sponsored by Legend Water.
Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park, commended the community businesses for their overwhelming support, emphasizing their pivotal role in sustaining the sport’s legacy.
The event generated $180,000, benefiting the North American Pony Chuckwagon and Chariot drivers and the races during Westerner Days. It was a testament to the sport’s spirit, camaraderie, and dedication.
